Watching fog descend and envelop a scenic mountain and valley, or even just the nearby reserve, from the comfort of your home is fascinating and wonderful.
However, driving through foggy roads is very challenging and dangerous.
The apparent reason is that your visibility is hampered. You don’t know what lies ahead. You can only see what’s in front of you.
With New Zealand entering a nationwide Level 4 lockdown again today, 18 August 2021, most of us think we are going through uncertain times once more. Another foggy season has descended.
For several months, we’ve watched or read news about how the Delta variant caused significant and devastating outbreaks in other countries. It is now in the community.
As of the time of writing, seven cases have already been infected with the COVID-19 Delta variant. Many of us experience an uncertain feeling when this disruption occurs.
How do we go through this uncertain season? Let us learn some important life lessons from driving through a foggy road.

Ensure all your lights are functioning.
Yes, you must ensure that all your lights are working — including headlights, tail lights, daytime running lights, fog lights, signal lights, brake lights, and hazard lights.
Don’t travel at all if your lights aren’t working perfectly.

In this uncertain situation, it is essential that we read, study, and apply the word of God.
The Psalmist says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path,” and we need His word to guide us in this foggy situation of our lives.
Slow down or find a safe place to stop.
Slowing down is essential when fog limits your visibility on the road. Reducing speed allows you to have more maneuverability options in case any hazards lie ahead.
However, if driving is challenging after slowing down, the best option is to find a safe place to stop until the fog has lifted.

In our life journey, there are times when we need to slow down or even take the time to stop, reflect, and yield.
Perhaps we have been so actively following the life blueprint we have charted for ourselves that we have neglected the Lord’s plan for us.
Then, we encountered a “foggy road” ahead, and life didn’t seem to go as planned.
As we continue to move, we may not be aware that we have drifted far away from the abundant life God has promised us. We’re heading to a possible disaster.
Friends, we need to slow down and consider taking the time to stop, reflect deeply, and check our bearings to ensure we are heading in the right direction and toward the right destination.
And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19).
What we need to do in this uncertain time
Instead of worrying about life’s uncertainties, how about thinking of the many ways you can:
- Be joyful in hope
- Patient in affliction
- Faithful in prayer
- Share with the Lord’s people who are in need.
- Practice hospitality.

As we navigate the pandemic’s challenges, let us be comforted by the assurance that His Word will guide and light our paths.
He will provide for our needs when we sometimes have to slow down or stop.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7
