In the spirit of Christmas, I would like to share the kindness that our landlady showed to typhoon-stricken Filipinos.

Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) struck Central Philippines on 8 November 2013. My wife and I were very concerned about the destruction it caused in Northern Iloilo, particularly in our town of Ajuy.
On Sunday afternoon, 10 November, I got a call from the Timaru Herald. Their reporter asked about the situation back home and about our plans to help fellow Filipinos.
On 11 November 2013, the Timaru Herald published our intention to assist the Philippines by fundraising for relief supplies, with the support of Hopevale Trust, a Timaru-based trust.

Two days later, while we were busy contacting friends abroad for help, I got a phone call from our landlady.
She told me that she read the article in the local paper and learned about what happened in the Philippines.
Then she said, “Instead of paying me for this week’s rent, I would like to donate it to your town’s relief effort.”
Her kindness surprised us. We’re so thankful for her generosity.
Our landlady’s contribution became part of early relief operations for Ajuy.
Take a look at a few additional photos of the relief efforts in Ajuy below.

Thank you, Lord, for giving us our generous landlady. The kindness of people in Timaru was quite impressive.
